ABOUT THE TOPS
- LAST TIME OUT: WKU Football put up over 600 yards of offense and beat Middle Tennessee 42-26 on Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Houchens-Smith Stadium to claim the program's seventh consecutive win over the rival Blue Raiders. The Hilltoppers never trailed Middle Tennessee as they improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in Conference USA play this season. WKU posted 642 yards of offense – the second straight game against Middle Tennessee in which the program has recorded over 600 yards – and tied the longest winning streak in the 75-game series history with the victory.
- CUSA STANDINGS: The Hilltoppers remain in the mix to make, and potentially host, the Conference USA Championship Game. WKU is currently second in the league standings with a 6-1 conference record, behind only Jax State. The Gamecocks are 6-0 in CUSA play, with a game at FIU this weekend, before facing off with WKU in the regular-season finale in Jacksonville, Alabama. Kennesaw State is still involved as well. The Owls are 5-1 in CUSA play, with a game against Missouri State and a trip to Liberty still on the schedule.
- CUSA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Left tackle Marshall Jackson was named the Conference USA Offensive Lineman of the Week, the conference announced Monday. It brought WKU's total number of CUSA weekly awards for the season to 16. It was the second CUSA Offensive Lineman of the Week award for Jackson and the fourth for the Hilltoppers overall, with left guard Laurence Seymore receiving the other two recognitions. WKU's 16 CUSA weekly awards in 2025 are the most in the league, with the next-closest team having nine. WKU's four CUSA Offensive Lineman of the Week are tied for most in the league this season, and Jackson's two are tied for the most CUSA Offensive Lineman of the Week awards by a player in the league. WKU also has four CUSA Freshman of the Week awards – two by quarterback Rodney Tisdale Jr. and two from running back Marvis Parrish. WKU has won three CUSA Special Teams Player of the Week awards, with two from Cole Maynard and one from Koron Hayward. In addition to those recognitions, quarterback Maverick McIvor has claimed the CUSA Offensive Player of the Week award three times, running back La'Vell Wright has been named the league's Offensive Player of the Week once and defensive back Jaylen Lewis has been named the CUSA Defensive Player of the Week once.
- FOURTH QUARTER DEFENSE: WKU has allowed only 32 points in the fourth quarter of games this season. That mark is the fewest in Conference USA and the fifth-fewest in the nation. WKU has shut out four of its 10 opponents during the fourth quarter this season, and the defense has only allowed two fourth-quarter touchdowns.
- WHAT YOU DO IN NOVEMBER, THEY REMEMBER: WKU Head Coach Tyson Helton has seen tremendous success in the month of November. He has a 19-6 overall record in the month of November as WKU's head coach, including an 18-5 record against CUSA competition. Last season was the first season the Hilltoppers lost multiple games in November under Helton, but in their final November game, WKU beat Jax State 19-17 on a game-winning field goal to send the program to the CUSA Championship Game. The Hilltoppers are 2-0 so far this November.
- AGAINST POWER CONFERENCE TEAMS: WKU has had some success against power conference teams in the past, with wins at Arkansas in 2019, at Vanderbilt in 2015, against Kentucky in 2013 and at Kentucky in 2012 during the program's FBS Era (since 2009). WKU has dropped its last eight games against teams in power conferences (at the time of the meeting), but of those losses, three were one-score games by a combined six points. WKU is 1-2 against SEC teams under Tyson Helton.
- PUNTING PROWESS: WKU punter Cole Maynard ranks second nationally in punting average at 48.66 yards per attempt on 41 attempts. The WKU season record is 45.9 yards per punt (John Haggerty; 2019).
QUOTABLE
- "Really excited to get to play an excellent football team in LSU and to be in a great stadium. I've had opportunities over my playing years and coaching years to go to Baton Rouge on several occasions. What a fantastic place to play. I know our players will be very excited to get the opportunity to compete there. This time of year you love these kind of games. We're looking forward to it, we're looking forward to this opportunity, and we'll get ready this week and see if we can get a big win." – WKU Football Head Coach Tyson Helton, on Saturday's game at LSU.
- "Another extremely high quality opponent. Looking forward to the prep – it's already sort of started – but, overall, it should be a really good test for the guys. I know they're looking forward to it. It should be a lot of fun." – WKU Football Offensive Coordinator Rick Bowie, on Saturday's game at LSU.
- "I think the biggest thing is we've got to do what we do and play and run the calls that we run really, really well. They've got some really good athletes. Their skills players are probably one of the best groups that we've seen all year, and then just in the country, right? Their receivers are really good, run after the catch, so we've got to call play that our guys are confident. They play fast. They do it at a high level and a high standard. Then we've got to go out there and tackle and tackle well, because those guys are really good in space and if you let them run free, they will go." – WKU Football Co-Defensive Coordinator Da'Von Brown, on Saturday's game at LSU.
