HOUSTON – WKU Women's Tennis had a strong showing in doubles play Friday on the first day of the Rice Invitational at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
The Lady Toppers claimed victories in all four doubles matches they played on the first day of the three-day event.
"I thought we started off great by winning four out of four doubles today," WKU Women's Tennis Head Coach Greg Davis said. "I think in singles we struggled today – out of eight singles matches, we won two sets. Rice showed us a level in singles today and depth that we hadn't seen this fall. I see Rice making the NCAA Tournament this year. Saturday we are looking to bring sustained effort throughout our singles matches to bring about better results."
In doubles, Paola Cortez and Anna-Marie Kopecka defeated Houston's Blanca Cortijo Parreno and Nina Skoric 6-1, Sayda Hernandez and Mariana Zegada defeated UT Arlington's Ana Paula Jimenez and Bruna Casasampere 6-3, Sofia Blanco and Samantha Martinez defeated Incarnate Word's Estefania Gonzalez and Lyric Bonilla 6-4, and Rachel Hermanova and Sunskrithi Damera defeated Incarnate Word's Isid Hernandez Leon and Iné Lamprecht 6-3.
The Lady Toppers dropped all eight singles matches they played Friday – six against Rice and two against UTSA.
The Rice Invitational will continue with matches Saturday, Nov. 4, and Sunday, Nov. 5, at the George R. Brown Tennis Center in Houston.
