DADE CITY, Fla. – WKU Women's Golf graduate senior Mary Joiner posted the program's best 18 and 36-hole scores on Monday afternoon at WKU's own Spring Break Shootout. Joiner led the Lady Toppers to the top of the leaderboard as they are tied with No. 42 North Florida for first place at 2-over 570.
WKU shot 5-over 289 in the first round as a team. The Red and White recorded the program's second-best 18-hole score in the second round after shooting 3-under 281, the lowest round of the tournament thus far out of the 15-team field. The 36-hole total of 570 is the program's best 36-hole score in Lady Topper Golf history.
This was Joiner's best 36-hole performance since the fall of 2018. After her first-round 2-under 69 at the par-71, 6,056-yard Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club, she was tied for third with three birdies and an eagle. In her second round, the Franklin, Ky., native posted seven birdies and fired a record-breaking 6-under to move up the leaderboard into first at 8-under 134.
While most golf courses the Lady Toppers play are par-72 courses, Joiner's 8-under 134 still holds up as the program record in relation to par.
Not far off Joiner was senior captain Megan Clarke. She improved by three strokes from the first to second rounds, shooting 3-over in the first followed by an even-par 71 in the second. She is tied for 10th with one round remaining.
Freshman Rachel Rich carded a 1-under 70 in the first round. She shot 5-over 76 in the second round to tie for 15th through 36 holes.
Both of sophomore Sarah Arnold's scores counted for the Lady Toppers. Her first-round 5-over 76 and second-round 2-over 73 landed her a t-30th placement going into Tuesday's final round.
Improving by six strokes from round one to round two was redshirt senior Teri Doss. She followed up a first round 78 with a second-round, 1-over 72. She is tied for 35th.
Senior Olivia Reed competed as an individual at the Spring Break Shootout and is currently tied for 15th. She finished the day with a pair of 2-over 73's to total 4-over 146.
WKU will finish its own event on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. CT.
