BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — With only two more games left in the regular season, the WKU women's basketball team will be looking to end on a positive note. First up, the Lady Toppers host Charlotte in E.A. Diddle Arena on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
WKU is 20-7 on the season and 12-4 in Conference USA. Charlotte is also 20-7 on the year and 11-5 in conference play. The Lady Toppers have won 13-straight home games, dating back to last season. That streak is tied for the 11th longest among NCAA Division I teams and the Lady Toppers are one of only 11 teams in Division I still perfect at home in 2019-20.
The Lady Toppers are coming off a 108-103 double overtime loss against Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro on Saturday. After being down as much as 13 points in the second half, WKU battled back to force overtime and then double overtime against the Lady Raiders.
Alexis Brewer led WKU in scoring with a career-high 28 points. Dee Givens poured in 24 points, notching her seventh 20-plus point performance of the season. Raneem Elgedawy picked up her 15th double-double of the season, a mark that is tied for the eighth most in a season by a Lady Topper. Meral Abdelgawad scored 13 points and Whitney Creech added 11 points.
It will be a battle of offense versus defense on Thursday. WKU comes into the game as the league's highest scoring team, averaging 74.3 points per game. Charlotte comes into the game giving up the third lowest points total in the conference, allowing only 58.7 points per contest this season.
It will be the 24th meeting between WKU and Charlotte all-time. The Lady Toppers lead the series, 19-5 and have won four straight against the 49ers.
The two teams have already squared off against each other this season, meeting on Jan. 18 in Charlotte. WKU claimed the win in that one, 60-56. Elgedawy and Abdelgawad led the Lady Toppers with 14 points each in that game. WKU had a 10-point lead with 5:47 left in the game, but the 49ers were able to cut it to three with 43 seconds left in the game. The Lady Toppers held strong defensively to get the win.
