BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU women's basketball team tips off the extended part of its schedule on Saturday at Florida Atlantic. In December, Conference USA decided the last four games of the regular season for all league teams with the best matchups in mind. The Lady Toppers and the Owls will go to battle at 1 p.m. (CT) in Boca Raton, Florida.
WKU is 19-6 on the season and 11-3 in C-USA play with a third place standing in the conference. After Thursday's games, the Lady Toppers stand just one game back from first and second place, but both Old Dominion (No. 1) and Rice (No. 2) hold a tiebreaker against WKU.
Florida Atlantic is 12-13 on the year and 6-8 in league play with a 10th place standing in the conference.
The Lady Toppers have a nine-game win streak coming into the game. That streak is the 15th longest in the nation.
In its last outing, WKU defeated Marshall, 79-65, on Thursday night in Bowling Green. Whitney Creech led the Lady Toppers in scoring with 19 points. Raneem Elgedawy picked up her 13th double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Meral Abdelgawad added 12 points and Dee Givens had 10.
Saturday will be the 22nd meeting between WKU and Florida Atlantic all-time and the second of the season. The Lady Toppers hold a 19-2 advantage in the series and have won 10 straight against the Owls.
In the last meeting between the two teams, Elgedawy put up 28 points and had 18 rebounds in the game. Givens had 25 points in the contest along with six rebounds. Elgedawy scored the first 13 points of the game for the Lady Toppers to start her successful night against the Owls.
Florida Atlantic is coming off two straight wins. The Owls defeated Louisiana Tech in a 77-75 thriller and topped rival FIU, 54-42, on Thursday night in Boca Raton. Crystal Primm leads the Owls in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game. Freshman Lotta Vehka-Aho is second, putting up 12.6 point per contest and Juliette Gauthier rounds out the double digit scorers, averaging 10.4.
