BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU women's basketball team will take on Marshall on Thursday with an eight-game winning streak on the line. Tipoff between the two teams is set for 6 p.m. in E.A. Diddle Arena.
WKU will be honoring first responders during the game and all area medical and emergency staff may receive free admission to the game.
The Lady Toppers enter the game with an 18-6 overall record and are 10-3 in Conference USA. Marshall is 11-13 on the season and 6-7 in conference play. WKU is in third place in the C-USA standings and Marshall is seventh.
On top of an eight-game win streak, WKU also has won 12-straight home games which ties as the 11th longest streak in the nation. The Lady Toppers are also one of 13 NCAA Division I teams that are still perfect at home this season, boasting a 10-0 record in Diddle.
Last week the Lady Toppers defeated UTEP and UTSA in Diddle Arena. Against the Miners, WKU built an early lead that held after a UTEP rally. The Lady Toppers won, 78-65. Alexis Brewer and Meral Abdelgawad led WKU in scoring with 17 points each. Against the Roadrunners, WKU got off to a hot start, scoring 51 first half points. Ten different Lady Toppers saw action in the game and all 10 scored. Dee Givens and Raneem Elgedawy led in scoring with 19 points apiece.
After a stretch of nine games where the Lady Toppers were averaging only 4.0 made 3-pointers, WKU is back to shooting form and averaging 7.6 per game in the last five. Givens has made 13 during that stretch and Brewer has made 11 while shooting 55 percent from 3-point range.
Elgedawy leads WKU in scoring on the season, averaging 17.2 points per game which is the third highest average in the conference. She's also leading the team in rebounds, pulling down 10.4 boards per game which is second in the league. Givens is the second leading scorer on the team, pouring in 16.8 points per game which is fifth in C-USA. Whitney Creech's 4.6 assists per game are the third most in the conference and she's averaging 14.0 points per game. Creech is the only player in C-USA to be top three in assists per game and top 15 in scoring.
Thursday's game will be the 15th meeting between WKU and Marshall all-time and the second this season. The Lady Toppers lead the series 13-1 and have won seven straight against the Thundering Herd.
In the meeting between the two teams earlier this season, Givens had her first double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Elgedawy finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Creech also added 15 points and seven assists and Abdelgawad had 12 points. The Lady Toppers won that game 74-65 in Huntington.
Marshall is led in scoring by freshman Savannah Wheeler who averages 13.6 points per game and is the reigning C-USA Freshman of the Week. The Thundering Herd have won two straight games and four of their last five.
