May 23rd marks 100 days until the 2018 season kickoff for the 100th season of WKU Football, and each day this summer, WKU Athletics will treat fans to unique and interesting history of Hilltopper Football, from never-before-seen photos to game tickets and programs and everything in between, all leading up to an August 31 season kick off.
DAY 100 (May 23) |
While organized football existed on The Hill prior to 1913, in the form of the Ogden College and Southern Normal School teams, it wasn't until 1913 when the first varsity team was formed. This photo, believed to be taken during the first-ever game, features the then-Western Kentucky State Normal School squad facing off against Elizabethtown High School. |
DAY 99 (May 24) |
This photo, sent on a postcard in 1913, includes the members of the original Western Kentucky State Normal School football team - the first varsity football team which would become the modern day Hilltoppers. |
DAY 98 (May 25) |
On the back of the postcard from above, a note to Ms. Helen Inglehart said of the team on Nov. 19, 1913, "How do you like the looks of these roughs?" |
DAY 97 (May 26) |
In 1922, Edgar Allen Diddle came to the Bowling Green campus and wore numerous hats. While Mr. Diddle would go on to become legendary on the basketball hardwood, he also spent seven seasons as the school's head football coach. Pictured on the left end of the back row, Mr. Diddle's first team in 1922 went 9-1 with a season opening win over Louisville, 6-0. |
DAY 96 (May 27) |
Mr. Diddle's third team, captained by Wilson "Babe" Hunt, has the odd distinction of being the only team in program history to win every game by way of shutout as they tallied four victories by scores of 65-0, 44-0, 35-0, and 73-0. Conversely, however, four of the five losses that season also came via shutouts. |
DAY 95 (May 28) |
After playing the first 11 seasons at the Fairgrounds in Bowling Green, the time had come for a proper athletic facility for the team to play their games. So, in 1927, Western Stadium was constructed at a cost of $50,000. Now known simply as the Colonnade, the stands still remain on the campus of Western Kentucky University. In the photo, where game action is taking place, the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts center now stands. |
DAY 94 (May 29) |
The 1928 team, featuring such stars as Gander Terry, E.B. Stansbury (spelled "Stansberry" above), and Turner Elrod, finished the season 8-1 with an incredible eight victories via shutout. The team allowed just seven points all season, those coming in the lone loss of the year: 7-6 at Union College. |
DAY 93 (May 30) |
This photo, taken at practice during the 1935 season, features members of coach Carl "Swede" Anderson's second team which went 7-3 on the year. Swede Anderson reamins the only head coach in program history to coach four or more seasons and never see his team post a losing record. |
DAY 92 (May 31) |
The 1938 season began with former letterman William "Gander" Terry taking over as head coach of the program, including this photo from a game during that year. Terry's 1938 squad was the first of three seven-win seasons (out of four total) for Terry and included a 32-7 victory over Eastern Kentucky. |
DAY 91 (June 1) |
Back in Western Stadium, Terry's second squad posted another seven-win season, going 7-1-1 and went undefeated at home with wins over Middle Tennessee (26-2) and Eastern Kentucky (26-0). |
