May 23rd marks 100 days until the 2018 season kickoff for the 100th season of WKU Football, and each day this summer, WKU Athletics will treat fans to unique and interesting history of Hilltopper Football, from never-before-seen photos to game tickets and programs and everything in between, all leading up to an August 31 season kick off.
Â
DAY 80Â (June 12) |
It was 1941, and though America still had not officially entered into World War II, this cover from the 15th annual Homecoming game in 1941 features a female student with red, white, and blue ribbons in her hair. The Hilltoppers defeated Eastern Kentucky State Teacher's College 27-20 in Gander Terry's final season as head coach. |
|
DAY 79Â (June 13) |
The final season before the program was halted for World War II featured a thin roster of Hilltoppers under the direction of one-year head coach Arnold Winkenhofer. Former letterman and head coach Gander Terry had left his post to serve his country in the U.S. Army. This game program is from the home opener that season against Marshall which the Hilltoppers won 19-13. |
|
DAY 78Â (June 14) |
In 1954, head coach Jack Clayton's Hilltoppers rallied off seven consecutive victories to open the season - the seventh coming against Louisville by way of a 25-7 score. |
|
DAY 77Â (June 15) |
In a rare roadtrip on this countdown, the Toppers traveled north in a return game for yesterday's 1954 game when they headed to Louisville in 1955. The Cardinals, at the time, were still playing at Parkway Field. |
|
DAY 76Â (June 16) |
Staying in 1955, here is a look at what Western Kentucky State College looked like from the air, taken from the 1955 football press guide. |
|
DAY 75Â (June 17) |
Back before it was called Parent's Weekend, many schools around the country hosted what was called "Dad's Day," so in honor of Father's Day today, the above is the Dad's Day game program from WKU's 1941 match-up with Howard. |
|
DAY 74Â (June 18) |
In 1952, during Jimmy Feix's All-American year for coach Jack Clayton, the Hilltoppers posted a 9-1 record and came away with their first-ever bowl victory in the Refrigerator Bowl with a 34-19 victory over Arkansas State, just up the road from Bowling Green in Evansville. |
|
DAY 73Â (June 19) |
Air travel in 1953 looks a little different than it does in 2018. Suit and tie was the standard travel attire for Coach Clayton's squad, including this photo taken in 1953 when the team presumably flew to Stetson in DeLand, Fla. |
|
DAY 72Â (June 20) |
Much like Hilltopper lettermen today, back in 1956 the Hilltopper letterman jacket was often the apparel item of choice when walking around campus. |
|
DAY 71Â (June 21) |
Captained by Dave Miller and Denny Wedge, the 1959 team was led by Nick Denes, then in his third season on The Hill. Seen here are players wearing relatively new plastic helmets. Until the 1940s, players still wore traditional leather helmets but harder plastic helmets started to proliferate the game in the 1950s with the face bar coming around that time as well. |
