May 23rd marks 100 days until the 2018 season kickoff for the 100th season of WKU Football, and each day this summer, WKU Athletics will treat fans to unique and interesting history of Hilltopper Football, from never-before-seen photos to game tickets and programs and everything in between, all leading up to an August 31 season kick off.
DAY 30 (August 1) |
As the Hilltoppers are set to begin practices in Fall Camp 2018 tomorrow, here's what practice looked like back in 1938. |
DAY 29 (August 2) |
With just 29 days to go until the Hilltoppers kick off at Wisconsin, the team opened camp and went through media day activities. |
DAY 28 (August 3) |
In 1978, head coach Jimmy Feix's Hilltoppers won the Ohio Valley Conference championship for the seventh time and fifth under Feix. Here, Feix addresses the crowd inside Diddle Arena alongside John Oldham, John Minton, Reggie Hayden, John Hall, and Tony Towns. |
DAY 27 (August 4) |
Speaking of John Hall, the 1977-80 letterman was tough as nails but must've had a hard day of play coming off the field in the above photo. |
DAY 26 (August 5) |
Just before the opening of Smith Stadium in 1968, here we see the Hilltoppers taking the field in 1963 en route to a Tangerine Bowl championship and the only undefeated season in school history. |
DAY 25 (August 6) |
A rare shot by today's standards, the Hilltoppers are seen here getting coached up in the huddle during a game against Morehead State. Though the photo is undated, it was likely taken in the mid to late 1970's as evidenced by the team's uniform and helmet combination. UPDATED: Thanks to athletic trainer emeritus Bill Edwards, we have this to share on the above photo: "Coach Sam Clark with #70 Phil Rich, #16 Darryl Drake presently Receivers Coach with Pittsburgh Steelers, Student Trainer Dean Geary who is a member of the Kentucky Athletic Trainers Society Hall of Fame among other Hilltoppers in the picture during Coach Feix's career!" |
DAY 24 (August 7) |
Jumping back over to the media guides, All-Century teamer Jim Burt is featured here on the cover of the 1963 media guide in one of the all-time iconic photos from his storied career. |
DAY 23 (August 8) |
Sticking in the media guide, the first page often includes something about the university in the earliest editions of the guides. This page, pulled from the inside pages of the 1956 media guide reads in part about Western Kentucky State College, as the school was known then: "Deep in south central Kentucky on a hilltop visible for miles, stands Western Kentucky State College...The college is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a city of approximately 26,000 population which may justly be called one of the most beautiful small cities in America." |
DAY 22 (August 9) |
If the football thing didn't work out for him, Virgil Livers might've had a career in the modeling industry as evidenced here in a potrait taken for the 1975 Talisman. |
DAY 21 (August 10) |
As we "charge" into the final 20 days of this countdown, an unidentified Hilltopper charges through a defender here in a game in the 1930s, still at Western Stadium. |
