BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Both WKU tennis teams fell to Northern Kentucky on Thursday at Kereiakes Park. The Hilltoppers lost 5-2 and the Lady Toppers fell 5-1. The losses drop the Hilltoppers to 2-6 on the year and the Lady Toppers to 4-5.
The Hilltoppers started the match with three close doubles matches. WKU's No.1 pair of senior Josh Smith and sophomore Alex Taranda knocked off NKU's top duo 9-7 to earn their third No.1 doubles win in a row. At the No.2 spot, WKU fell 9-8. Senior J.T. Closi and sophomore Alex Stewart edged out NKU in the No.3 match 8-4 to clinch the doubles point for WKU.
The Lady Toppers began the day with singles play. Senior Carolina Barboza won her third singles match in her last four tries, but WKU was unable to scratch out any other singles points, therefore dropping the match at 5-1.
The Hilltoppers managed to pull out one victory in singles play with Taranda claiming the No.3 match. NKU took the other five matches to win 5-2.
Both teams were scheduled to play Tennessee-Wesleyan in Athens, Tenn., on Sunday, but were forced to cancel the match due to rain. The Lady Toppers will play the Lady Vols of Tennessee on Wednesday in Murray, Ky., at 3 p.m.
