BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU tennis wrapped up the regular season with a home match against North Alabama on Sunday afternoon at Bowling Green High School. The Lady Toppers won their match 6-1 to improve to 7-7 on the year. The Hilltoppers bested the Lions 4-3 to finish 6-7 in the regular season.
Both teams won their No. 1 doubles matches with redshirt senior Josh Smith and junior Alex Taranda winning their fifth doubles match in six tries. The Lady Toppers clinched the doubles point when senior Carolina Barboza and sophomore Gabby Crofford taking the No. 2 doubles match 8-6. Junior J.T. Closi and sophomore Alex Stewart clinched the point on the Hilltopper side with their No. 3 doubles victory.
In singles play, the Lady Toppers won at the No. 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 spots. Senior Monta Reinfelde moved her career No. 1 singles record to 48-13 with her straight-set victory. The Hilltoppers' match was a nail-biter. It all came down to freshman Andrew Hill's No. 5 singles match. With WKU and UNA tied at 3, Hill won a tie-breaker in the first set before clinching the match for the Hilltoppers with a 6-3 win in the second set.
Today was also Senior Day for both squads as the Lady Toppers recognized Monta Reinfelde, Carolina Barboza, Alex Crofford, and Morgan Freeman. The Hilltoppers honored Patrick De Seroux before the matches as well.
Last week, the tennis teams split with Campbellsville with the Lady Toppers losing 4-3 and the Hilltoppers winning 6-1. Friday's matches against Dayton were cancelled due to inclement weather and will not be rescheduled.
WKU heads to New Orleans on April 17 to begin the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
