EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Lady Topper tennis team got its season underway Sunday night with a sweep over the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles inside the Evansville Tennis Center.
Senior Monta Reinfelde started the match with a two-set win over USI's Liz Wilm at the No. 1 singles position. Reinfelde is coming off a season where she posted a 12-3 record at the No. 1 spot.
Reinfelde teamed up with junior Madeline Phillips to take the No. 1 doubles match 8-2 over Wilm and Brenda Wu. The duo recorded a 10-4 record in doubles play last season.
Junior Emily Przystawski, a transfer from Wofford College, won her first singles and doubles matches as a WKU athlete, defeating Wu two sets to one in the No. 3 singles match. Senior Alex Crofford joined Przystawski to win the No. 3 doubles match.
"I think Przystawski's wins were a good confidence booster. I'm happy that she was able to come out and perform well in her first match with us," said head coach Jeff True.
This is the second consecutive season that the Lady Toppers have begun with a sweep over their opponent. WKU took down Bellarmine in the season opener last year 7-0.
The Lady Toppers return to the courts on Feb. 7 as they take on Georgetown (Ky.) in Lexington, Ky., at noon (CT).
The Hilltoppers were scheduled to play USI following the conclusion of the Lady Toppers' match, but were forced to reschedule due to weather. The match will be made up at a later date.
