Bowling Green, Ky. - The WKU tennis teams appeared in three matches this weekend, with the Hilltoppers starting their season 2-0 and the Lady Toppers falling to 1-1 on the year.
The Hilltoppers opened their season on Friday at the Lexington Tennis Center with a 6-1 win over Georgetown College (0-2). Junior J.T. Closi won his No. 1 singles match in straight sets and took the No. 1 doubles match with sophomore Alex Taranda.
The duo teamed up again on Saturday in Louisville, Ky., as WKU defeated Bellarmine University (1-2) by a score of 5-2. Closi once again took victories at the No. 1 singles and doubles spots.
Freshman Andrew Hill notched his first two victories as a Hilltopper with wins on Friday and Saturday.
Hall of Fame head coach Jeff True said of Hill, "It gives us depth when I can throw a freshman in the lineup and he can go and get us some wins."
The Lady Toppers dropped their neutral site game against SEMO (4-2) on Sunday afternoon. The two squads met at the Kenlake Indoor Tennis Center near Murray, Ky. SEMO won the match 5-2, with senior Monta Reinfelde and sophomore Gabby Crofford netting the lone WKU points in singles play.
The Hilltoppers' next match is set for Feb. 16 against USI (2-0) in Evansville, Ind. The Lady Toppers will take the trip down I-65 to Nashville, Tenn., to play the Belmont Bruins (1-1) on Feb. 14.
