The victory also marked the 700th win in WKU Softball program history – in just the 23rd season of the team's existence. Between her playing days (2000-02) and head coaching (2014-present), head coach Amy Tudor has been a part of the team for 347 of those wins – 49.6 percent.
"I felt like our pitching was superb this weekend; both of them did a really good job," opened Tudor of the series sweep. "Obviously Shelby carried the most innings but I thought Katie threw really well in her game and we played great defense behind them. We were getting a lot of people on, I think offensively, we let it out today."
The Hilltoppers climbed to 21-4 with the victory and 5-1 in Conference USA play. Additionally, the Red and White now sit at 672 all-time against UTEP. The Miners moved to 10-17 overall and 1-5 in league action.
WKU needed just 24 games to hit 20 wins on the season matching the program record set by the 2020 squad, who began the campaign 20-4. With their 21st win on Sunday, the Hilltoppers achieved another program first – marking the best record through 25 games.
The Hilltoppers are also now 13-0 when playing at the WKU Softball Complex this season.
Taylor Davis delivered her second straight 3-for-3 performance at the plate in Sunday's win and finished with a .750 batting average across the weekend. Brylee Hage and Sanders both added two-hit outings. Sanders, Jordan Ridge and Curry each added multi-RBI efforts including three from Ridge.
Nunn would finish the weekend 3-0 after pitching 4.0 frames to earn the victory on Sunday. She allowed just two hits and no free bases while striking out three. Nunn posted a perfect 0.00 ERA across the weekend with 17 strikeouts, seven hits allowed and 12.0 innings pitched. Nunn climbed to 13-2 on the season and 4-0 in league play.
Gardner made a relief appearance in the top of the fifth, facing the minimum and needing just 13 pitches for the three outs.
WKU struck for two runs in its first trip to the plate, taking advantage of a pair of Miner miscues. The Hilltoppers would add five runs on six hits in the bottom of the third to push the lead to 7-0 before adding two more tallies in the fourth for the final 9-0 margin.
UTEP would never put a runner in scoring position on Sunday with both hits coming in separate innings and being singles.
