Lady Toppers Complete Perfect Regular Season at Home

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — It's only fitting on Senior Day that the WKU women's basketball team was led by its seniors. The Lady Topper seniors scored a combined 46 points in the team's 71-67 win against Louisiana Tech on Saturday to finish out the regular season with a perfect 13-0 record in E.A. Diddle Arena.

It was just the fourth time in WKU's modern history that a Lady Topper team has made it through their home schedule unscathed and the first since the 2005-06 season. WKU has also won 15-straight at home after ending last season with two home victories. That streak is tied for the ninth longest in NCAA Division I.

The Lady Toppers improve to 22-7 on the season and end the regular season with a 13-4 record in Conference USA. WKU ends the season tied for second place in the C-USA standings, but after tiebreaker rules are applied will be the three seed in the conference tournament next week.

The Lady Toppers were led by Dee Givens with 18 points and four rebounds. Alexis Brewer and Raneem Elgedawy each added 13 and Whitney Creech had 11. Elgedawy also had 10 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season and fifth straight. She's the first Lady Topper since Chastity Gooch in 2012-13 to achieve the feat.

Louisiana Tech jumped out to an early lead, going ahead 24-14 after the first quarter. The Lady Toppers recovered by outscoring the Lady Techsters 19-10 in the second quarter, but went into halftime down 34-33.

Brewer came out of the break and fired a 3-pointer to give WKU the lead to start the second half. LA Tech quickly evened it back up, but an and-one from Givens and a three from Meral Abdelgawad put the Lady Toppers ahead by six. The Lady Techsters cut it to one, but WKU responded with a 10-2 run to go ahead by nine. The two teams traded baskets but LA Tech scored the final four points of the quarter to cut it to 58-55 going into the fourth quarter.

Wasting no time, the Lady Techsters tied the game just eight seconds into the fourth quarter. LA Tech went ahead by two with a pair of free throws, but Brewer once again hit a timely three to put WKU back ahead. After a LA Tech layup, Brewer scored her fifth straight point to put WKU up one again. Creech gave WKU a two-point with a free throw, but a Lady Techster knocked a three with 3:29 left. Brewer was fouled on the next play and made both free throws to once again put WKU up by one.

The Lady Techsters would not go away however and retook the lead by one with 2:27 left in the game. Both teams failed to score for over a minute, but Creech found Elgedawy open for a layup with 53 seconds left to give WKU a one-point lead again. LA Tech got off two shots but Creech came up with a big defensive rebound and was fouled with 15 seconds left on the clock. She made both and gave WKU a 3-point lead. WKU held the Lady Techsters defensively and Givens iced the win with a made free throw.

WKU outrebounded LA Tech 35-23 to improve to 17-0 this season when winning the battle on the boards. The Lady Toppers forced the Lady Techsters into 11 turnovers and capitalized with 20 points from LA Tech's miscues.

The Lady Toppers will enter postseason next week at the C-USA Championship in Frisco, Texas. With the third seed, WKU will face the winner of the six and 11 seeds. The official bracket will be released by C-USA on Saturday night.
