BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Following one of the most successful campaigns in recent history, WKU's women's tennis program was named an ITA All-Academic Team, and five Lady Toppers earned ITA Scholar-Athlete Awards.
The team award is open to any ITA program with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year, which includes the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters.
The Lady Toppers earned the team award with a 3.66 cumulative team GPA on the heels of their second consecutive perfect Annual Progress Report score.
Individually, Andreanna Christopolou, Lisa Freiss, Elpida Malamou, Cindy Oest and Violetta Shatalova all earned ITA Scholar-Athlete awards for maintaining a grade point average of 3.50 or greater.
Christopolou finished her senior campaign as WKU's female academic student-athlete of the year and tallied a 14-10 overall mark in the spring. Malamou was a stellar 10-2 at the No. 1 singles spot in the spring while Shatalova locked down the No. 6 spot with an 8-3 mark. On the doubles court, Oest and her partner, Natalia De Ugarte, went 13-4 as No. 2 in dual matches and 20-7 overall.
Conference USA honored head coach Jonatan Berhane with the league's coach of the year award following the season as WKU picked up their first wins in the C-USA Tournament in program history and the first in any conference tournament since 2001.
