C-USA Championship Final Results
FORT MYERS, Fla. - WKU women's golf claimed its best finish in a conference tournament since 1997 on Wednesday afternoon at the Verandah Club, tying for fourth overall in the 2016 C-USA Championship with a score of 43-over 907 (305-304-298).
WKU's score of 907 also ranks as the Lady Toppers' second-best conference championship tally in program history, topped only by last year's 890 in the team's first C-USA campaign. In addition, senior Ellinor Haag became the program's top finisher in a conference championship since Crystal Anglea finished fifth in the 2000 Sun Belt Championship.
"We came to Florida knowing that we had a team capable of playing very well in this tournament and I'm so proud of the result that we were able to come away with," Head Coach Adam Gary said. "To do something that this program hasn't accomplished in nearly 20 years shows the resolve and talent that our players have, especially after battling back from the way that we started on Monday."
Haag continued her steady climb up the leaderboard during Wednesday's final round, culminating in a ninth-place finish. The senior claimed WKU's first top-10 finish in a conference championship since a 10th-place showing by Megan Pendergraff at the 2007 Sun Belt Championship. Haag tied for the third-most birdies in the field with 11 across her three rounds and played the par-3 holes at two-under par, tied with Emily Alexander for the team lead.
Georgina Blackman topped her finish at last year's C-USA Championship, tying for 16th overall alongside Julie Houston of UTSA and Marshall's Ylva Forslund. The sophomore led WKU in par-5 scoring for the tournament, finishing at even-par on those holes, one of just 10 golfers in the field of 55 to do so. Blackman also finished as the field's leader in pars, logging 43 across the 54 holes.
Closing out her first year at WKU after transferring from Belmont, Katie Story tied for 23rd with Middle Tennessee's Avery George and Marshall's Pimrawee Huang. Story's four-over par mark on par-4 holes led the Lady Toppers in the tournament, while her seven birdies tied with Alexander for the second-most on the team.
Alexander and Daniela Galassi closed out the card for the Lady Toppers, finishing tied for 27th and 50th, respectively. Alexander joined Haag at two-under on par-3 holes for the event, while Galassi earned her second-best finish of the spring, falling just shy of her 42nd-place showing at the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate as an individual.
"This team has battled all year and it really showed over the last three days," Gary said. "This is also a young group as three of our five golfers were sophomores. I am very proud of the way that they represented our team and WKU as a whole and look forward to the continued success of this program."
Middle Tennessee claimed the 2016 C-USA Championship with a 12-over 876 (296-296-284), while FIU's Meghan MacLaren repeated as the individual champion, finishing at 3-under 213 (73-71-69).
WKU closes out the 2015-16 campaign as one of the best in school history, with seven top-five finishes as a team and a championship at the Morehead State Citrus Challenge Invitational in March. With that victory, Gary became just the second coach in program history to win a tournament in each of his first two seasons at WKU.
