KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - WKU women's golf battled through the second round at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic on Monday with a 22-over 310, bringing the Lady Toppers' two-round tally to 37-over 613 as the team sits in sole possession of 16th place.
Only one team finished fewer than 10 strokes over par on Monday as Delaware fired a nine-over 297 for the low round of the day. Coastal Carolina and host College of Charleston sit tied atop the team leaderboard with identical scores of 589, 13-over par. Among the four C-USA teams competing, WKU sits second, trailing only Old Dominion's tally of an 18-over 599 that has the Lady Monarchs in fifth place.
Individually, senior Ellinor Haag paced the Lady Toppers in the second round, firing a three-over 75 to climb up nine spots on the leaderboard into a seven-way tie for 16th place. Haag trails only Old Dominion's Katerina Vlasinova (+3, 147) among C-USA competitors in the event through two rounds.
Katie Story followed her opening-round 75 with a six-over 78 on Monday afternoon to remain in the top quarter of the leaderboard, and sophomore Georgina Blackman sits just one stroke off Story's pace with a 10-over 154 through her first two rounds. Blackman is tied with seven other golfers for 65th place.
Among Lady Toppers, no individual made a larger jump up the leaderboard on Monday than Daniela Galassi, who vaulted up 43 spots on the strength of a four-over 76, WKU's second-lowest round of the day. Galassi improved six strokes from her first round and sits tied for 110th in the field of 216 golfers at 14-over 158. Rounding out the WKU card was Emily Alexander, who is tied for 182nd after two rounds at 24-over 168.
By virtue of being one of the top 20 teams in the competition heading into Tuesday's final round, WKU will compete on the Osprey Point course for the tournament championship beginning with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. (CT). The Lady Toppers are set to be paired with Richmond and Charleston Southern for the final round of competition and will begin play on holes 14, 15 and 16 on Tuesday morning.
