DUNNELLON, Fla. - True freshman Georgina Blackman continued her hot streak for the WKU women's golf team on Monday, firing a one-over 145 (68-77) to finish fourth through two rounds at the Morehead State Ocala Spring Invitational.
The event, held at the par-72, 6,113 yard Juliette Falls Golf Resort in Dunnellon, Fla., is tightly contested as the Lady Tops fired a 25-over 601 (304-297) team score to tie for fifth in the 18-team field. However, just five strokes separate WKU from team leader Daytona State College, and with one round remaining, it is still very much anyone's event.
"We didn't put our best stuff on the course for the first round and that hurt us, but we rallied back and played well as a team in the second to get back in contention," said first-year head coach Adam Gary. "It's a tight field and the team who was leading the first round is now eighth and the leader now finished the first round in ninth."
Junior Ellinor Haag tied for 25th with a seven-over 151 (78-73) while a pair of Hilltoppers, senior April Butler (78-75) and junior Michaela Bordeianu (80-73), both fired a nine-over 153 to tie for 36th.
True freshman Emily Alexander wrapped up the card with a 16-over 160 (84-76) to finish tied for 69th.
While five strokes separate the Lady Tops from the lead, only five more strokes in the opposite direction keep them inside the top 10 in a very close field. WKU will tee off tomorrow morning for the third and final round at 7:15 a.m. CT.
