BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- WKU and FAU defenses held tight to keep Thursday night's regular season finale a scoreless double overtime draw. WKU finishes the regular season 8-5-5 and 4-3-3 in Conference USA, while FAU moves to 12-7-1 and 6-3-1 in conference play.
Although held scoreless, WKU had plentiful opportunities to seal the game with eight shots on goal and 20 shots total in the game. Four minutes into the second overtime, senior Lauren Moats looked to have a great look at the goal from a free kick that was about 25 yards out, but the ball missed the goal by a hair and bounced off of the post. With eight saves on the night, FAU goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater had her work cut out for her with the WKU attack. Drinkwater and the Owl defense have claimed six straight shutouts.
WKU was led in shots by Hannah Chua with four and Moats, Caitlin Hesse and Iris Dunn each had three looks.
On the other end of the field, WKU held the Owls to 12 shots in the 110 minutes of play. Keeper Allison Leone finished the night with two saves and her sixth shutout of the season. FAU came into the match averaging 2.5 goals in the last six games.
The extra period draw was the seventh time this season that the Lady Toppers have went into overtime, the most overtimes in one season in program history. WKU finishes with 2-0-5 record in overtime matches this season.
The tie earns WKU one point in conference standings, currently propelling the Lady Toppers to fifth in the rankings. Now WKU must wait and see the results of the rest of the weekend around Conference USA to know their fate in the postseason. North Texas, FAU, Marshall and Rice have clinched a spot in the conference tournament already and four more spots are up for grabs.
The game was the final game at the WKU Soccer Complex for seniors Chandler Clark, Alanna Clancey and Moats. The trio has racked up 40 wins in their time on the Hill and has played major roles in the successes of the program on and off the field.
