MIAMI, Fla. -- North Texas found the back of the net with four seconds left in the first half to give the top-seeded Mean Green a 1-0 win over WKU in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championship in Miami, Fla. on Wednesday at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
The Lady Toppers finish the season with an 8-6-5 record overall and a 4-3-3 mark in conference play. The loss eliminated WKU from the tournament. North Texas advances to take on Middle Tennessee on Friday in the semifinals.
It looked like the two teams were going into halftime scoreless, but Molly Grisham of North Texas headed a ball that took a fortunate bounce into the net with four seconds remaining in the half. That score would be enough to give the Mean Green the win, after a scoreless second half.
The Lady Toppers outshot North Texas with 16 shots compared to the Mean Green's eight in the contest. WKU held North Texas well below their season average of 16 shots per game. WKU's offense put six shots on frame throughout the game.
The North Texas defense pitched it 14th shutout of the season. The Mean Green goalkeeper, Jackie Kerestine, finished with six saves in the game.
WKU loses three seniors to graduation with the conclusion of the season. Lauren Moats, Chandler Clark and Alanna Clancey all leave the program after four years. Moats finishes her career making her mark on the program. She finishes as the seventh all-time scorer in WKU history with 18 career goals. She is also top-ten in career points and game-winning goals. Clark finishes with 45 consecutive starts in the WKU backfield and was named to the All-Conference first team with her play this season. Clancey finishes having played in over 70 games in her career and securing a game-winner for WKU in her sophomore season.
