BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Three members of WKU Tennis traveled to Amelia Island, Fla. for the Amelia Island Women's Championship. Emilia Granstrom won two matches before bowing out of the tournament. Granstrom and Andreanna Christopoulou lost their only doubles match together and Elpida Malamou lost her only singles match.
"Emilia did a good job winning two of her three matches in the tournament," commented coach Jonatan Berhane. "Andreanna looked energetic and focused in her doubles match with Emilia and they played well together."
Granstrom was placed in the Qualifying Round of the singles tournament. She would have to win three matches to advance to the Main Draw bracket. Granstrom advanced to the second round after knocking off Lizeth Ramirez of Colombia, 6-0, 6-1. She then faced Tetiana Luzhanska in the semi-finals of the Qualifiers. Luzhanska reached a career-high world ranking of 131 in 2011. She has competed in the US Open, Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. Granstrom won the first set, 6-1, and went up 2-0 in the second set when Luzhanska retired due to injury. Granstrom advanced to the finals, but could not get past Nicole Frenkel.
Granstrom and Andreanna Christopoulou paired up to play in the Qualifying Round of the doubles tournament. They faced the No. 1 doubles duo from Syracuse, Rhianna Newborn and Amanda Rodgers. Granstrom/Christopoulou quickly won the first set 6-3. The second set was a much closer affair, with the WKU duo seeing two match points slip away. Newborn/Rodgers came out the victors, 7-6(2), sending the match to a third set. Granstrom/Christopoulou could not come back and dropped the third set, 10-3, losing the match.
"Elpida got to play a singles match where I saw a very promising tennis game," said Berhane.
Elpida Malamou played only one singles match during the tournament. She lost to the No. 1 seed from Syracuse.
"The whole team needs more matches," Berhane said. "We have a few more tournaments in the coming weeks and it's a great opportunity for the girls to get more match play experience."
The Lady Toppers will head to Salem, N.C. to compete in the Wake Forest Invitational on October 3-5.
