MOBILE, Ala. -- Maintaining their pace from the first two rounds, the WKU women's golf team wrapped up the third and final round of the 12th Annual USA Women's Invitational in 11th place, scratching a 315 round score on the day to finish at 944 (+80).
The team, which hit 318 and 311 in the first two rounds yesterday, had a pair of golfers improve their round lows from yesterday as Michaela Bordeianu and Daniela Galassi both shaved strokes off their total round scores.
"We had not been able to get on the course for a full 18-rounds all winter so this was our first real opportunity," said coach Ron Burchett. "I thought our girls handled the course well and found ways to improve along the way. It's a process and we're going to enjoy getting back to practice to get better."
Ellinor Haag, who entered the day as WKU's leader on the scorecard, turned in a seven-over 79 to finish in a tie for 12th place (228) while April Butler shot one stroke over her event low, scratching a five-over 77 on the day to finish at No. 29 (235).
Bordeianu, on the heels of a three-stroke improvement from round two, finished in a tie for No. 44 with a 239 (80-81-78) overall score. McKenzie Smith finished at No. 55 with a 243 (80-81-82) while Galassi came in at No. 64 with a 238 (84-83-81).
The par-72, 6,071 yard Azalea City Golf Course saw American Athletic Conference member Memphis take the overall team title, winning by two strokes over Jacksonville State who entered the day as the leader, at 905. Individually, the Tigers' Leighann Cabush shot a 220 (73-73-74) to take the crown, eight strokes ahead of Haag.
Fatima Fern Cano of Troy finished as the Sun Belt's top performer with a 223 in third place.
The team will return to the course this weekend when they travel to Charleston, S.C., for the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston.
