MOBILE, Ala. -- Paced by a sixth-place day by sophomore Ellinor Haag, the WKU women's golf team finished the first day of the 12th Annual USA Women's Invitational in 11th place, tallying a 629 (+53) 36-hole score.
Held at the par-72, 6,071 yard Azalea City Golf Club, Jacksonville State leads the pack with a 603 (+27) team score and just seven strokes separate the top five teams.
For WKU, Haag's five-over 149 (76-73) led the team and is just three strokes off individual leader Fatima Fern Cano of Troy's pace at 146 (73-73).
Behind Haag, April Butler finished the day in a tie for 39th place with a 14-over 158 (82-76) while Michaela Bordeianu and McKenzie Smith tied for 53rd, each with identical round scores of 17-over 161 (80-81). Daniela Gallassi finished the day at No. 68 with a 23-over 167 (84-83).
Butler was also one of just four golfers on the day, along with Shelby Sain and Leighann Cabush of Memphis and Becca Horner of Troy, to shoot an eagle while Haag led all individuals with seven birdies in 18 holes.
Butler was also among the best on par-five scoring, averaging a 4.63, trailing only Alabama State's Dismary Marquez (4.50).
The teams will return to the course tomorrow morning at 8:15 a.m. for the final 18 holes.
