BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Two members of the Lady Topper tennis team competed in the Ohio Valley USTA/ITA Regional Tournament this past weekend. Emilia Granstrom and Andreanna Christopoulou combined for a 4-3 record in the tournament.
Granstrom was selected to play in the main draw of the tournament. She beat her first opponent Amandine Faouzi of Eastern Kentucky by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Faouzi was named the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year. Granstrom moved on to the second round where she faced Joanna Henderson of Tennessee. Granstrom bowed out of the tournament after a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Henderson.
Christopoulou started the weekend playing in the qualifying bracket where she would have to win two matches to advance to the main draw. She earned her first win against Ana Rajkovic of Miami (Ohio), 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. In the final game of the qualifying bracket, Christopoulou defeated Allison Storie of UT Chattanooga, 6-2, 6-1. In the main draw she faced Christine Guerrazzi of Miami (Ohio). Guerrazzi came out with the 6-1, 6-3 victory.
In doubles, Granstrom and Christopoulou teamed up to play in the doubles qualifying bracket. They first took on Ornella Di Salvo and Vanessa Tavares of Austin Peay. They defeated the duo, 8-1. They dropped the next match to Hitomi Naito and Burco Tari of UT Martin, one match short of the main draw.
"I think both Andreanna and Emilia had very solid performances in the tournament," commented head coach Jonatan Berhane. "They are going through a big transition with school and playing college tennis. All the freshmen will keep improving with more experience and our returners are helping them adjust to college life."
The Lady Toppers will next compete in the Arkansas State Invitational played on November 7-8.
