VIDEO: Lauen Moats Breaks Down Her Game-Winning Goal
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU sophomore forward Lauren Moats' goal in the 74th minute broke a 1-1 tie Sunday at the WKU Soccer Complex as the Lady Toppers registered their first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Indiana State.
Senior Kiersten Ottaway delivered a corner kick to the middle of the box in the 74th minute and Moats was able to find the ball in traffic and put it in the net with some help from the crossbar. Moats' goal was the eighth of her career and the second of the game-winning variety.
Freshman Haley Baldridge netted her first-career goal and WKU's first of the season at the 18:49 marker, finishing off a nice pass from fellow freshman Iris Dunn to put the Lady Toppers in front 1-0. Baldridge's goal snapped WKU's 220 minute scoreless streak to open the season. The assist was a career-first for Dunn as the rookie tandem combined to take seven of WKU's 24 shots.
Indiana State fought back late in the first half, using a Kate Johnson goal off the crossbar to equal the game at 1-1 in the 40th minute. WKU goalkeeper Nora Abolins wouldn't allow any more shots into the goal and finished the game with three saves.
That's about the only offense WKU allowed the Sycamores to generate as the Lady Toppers held a 24-12 shot advantage. WKU's 11-member freshmen class made significant offensive impact over the non-conference weekend slate, firing 27 of the Lady Toppers 47 shots against Rice and Indiana State.
WKU's victory on Sunday moved the Lady Toppers to 1-1-1 on the season and dropped Indiana State to 1-2-0.
The Lady Toppers return to action Thursday at the WKU Soccer Complex as they continue their non-conference slate against Austin Peay. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m. (CT) and hot dogs will be sold for $1 at the concession stand. For tickets and more information call 1-800-5 BIGRED or visit WKUSports.com.
