HOW IT HAPPENED
Looking to extend their CUSA winning streak, the Tops recorded the first shot of the match in the 11th minute from Makenna Egan, but a save by the Blue Hens' goalkeeper kept the score even. In the 29th minute, the Tops struck first as Georgia Liapis intercepted a pass from Delaware and sent the ball into the top-left corner of the net. The WKU defense limited the Blue Hens to just one shot on goal in the opening half, with goalkeeper Mia Riddick recording the save.
In the second half, Danielle Lewin took her first shot of the match but was unable to find the back of the net. In the 65th minute, Cena Carlson received the ball and quickly found Alyvia Walls, who sent a shot into the upper-right corner of the goal to put the Tops ahead, 2-0. Delaware responded with a long-range shot that slipped just under the crossbar to put them on the board. In the 87th minute, Riddick made a save on another Blue Hens shot, but Delaware found the equalizer on the rebound. The Hilltoppers were unable to find a late game-winner, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
QUOTABLE
"Delaware is a really good team," said Head Coach Jason Neidell. "We were able to get a second goal in the second half and hoped we could manage and see the game through from there. Unfortunately, we let this one slip through our fingertips in the closing segment of the game. I'm proud of the way our group battled today, and the expectation they had for this matchup. We will learn and grow from this one and be better for it at the end of the season."
