BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The WKU men's and women's tennis teams combined to win three matches this weekend, with the Lady Toppers defeating Tennessee State and West Alabama while the Hilltoppers disposed of Tennessee State.
Both teams made quick work of Tennessee State Friday afternoon, sweeping the Tigers 7-0.
The Lady Toppers emerged victorious from a tight battle with West Alabama Saturday, squeaking out a 4-3 win over the Tigers. Monta Reinfelde led the way with wins at No.1 singles and No.1 doubles. She defeated Natalia Cardenas 6-2, 6-4 in singles play and teamed with Madeline Phillips in an 8-4 victory over West Alabama's Helga Jeske and Shannon McEvov.
Gabby Crofford and Katrina Vucina combined to score the deciding points in the match, with Crofford winning 6-0, 6-7, 7-5 in a thriller at No.4 singles and Vucina winning a three-set battle against McEvov.
The win was the third-straight for the Lady Toppers, who improved to 9-7 on the season.
The Hilltoppers struggled in their second meeting with West Alabama, falling 7-0 to the Tigers for the second time this season. West Alabama captured six wins in singles play and won two of the three doubles matches for the sweep. WKU's No.1 doubles pair of Andrew Fish and Josh Smith did manage to win their match, slipping by Anton Ivanov and Adam Drysdale 9-8.
The loss dropped WKU to 5-11 on the year. Both the men's and women's teams wrap up regular-season play this week as the men take on Lindsey Wilson, Murray State and North Alabama while the Lady Toppers duel Lindsey Wilson and North Alabama.
