NASHVILLE, Tenn. - WKU senior Thomas Krug used a singles win in straight sets Monday afternoon to reach the 50-win plateau for his career in singles play. The win moves Krug into eighth place all-time in number of wins at WKU and with an overall record of 50-7, his winning percentage of .877 ranks highest in Hilltopper tennis history. Krug is currently a team-best 10-2 in singles competition in 2010, after going 16-2 last season. All of his matches have been played at the No. 1 spot for WKU.
"Having won 87-pecent of his singles matches from the No. 1 spot, Tomi [Thomas Krug] will rank as one of WKU's all-time great tennis players," WKU head coach Jeff True said. "Players like that just don't come along very often."
Krug led the way for the Hilltoppers on Monday, as WKU blanked host Tennessee State, 7-0 after winning all six singles matches, as well as all three doubles. Krug defeated Lawrence Washington, 6-2, 6-1, and teamed up with Craig Kirchgessner to defeat the team of Washington and Justin Hamm in doubles play, 8-3.
Arul Selvan won his second-straight singles match, improving to 9-2 on the year after a win over Austin Fields in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Currie Martin, playing from the No. 2 spot for WKU, defeated Justin Hamm in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Martin and Lance Freeman also won in doubles competition, defeating the team of Austin Fields and Aaron Fields, 8-3. Priyank Gangadharan took down Aaron Fields in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, to earn his fourth singles win of the season.
The Hilltoppers will now gear up for the Sun Belt Shootout in Troy, Ala., starting Friday, April 2. WKU will take part in three matches in three days over the weekend, representing the only matches to be played against Sun Belt Conference opponents until the Sun Belt Conference Tournament takes place on April 23.
