BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University men's and women's tennis teams opened up the 2010 season by completing the sweep of visiting Union College on Saturday. The men held on for a 4-3 win over the Bulldogs, while the Lady Toppers won going away, 6-1.
The Hilltoppers (1-0) battled back in singles after both Thomas Krug and Currie Martin fell at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots. WKU rallied to win three out of the last four singles, with Arul Selvan defeating Piere Vernin 6-4, 6-4 to get Hilltoppers their first victory of the afternoon. Lance Freeman took down Kyle Shilling 6-4, 6-0 and Robert Whitmer defeated Lucas Oliveira 7-6, 6-4 to give WKU the 4-3 win after the Hilltoppers won two out of the three doubles. Quinn Saine and Andrew Swanson defeated Bartos Micher and Alvaro Vargas 8-4 in doubles, while Arul Selvan and Priyank Gangadharan took care of Kyle Shilling and Lucas Oliveira 8-2.
For the Lady Toppers (1-0), five out of the six singles went in favor of WKU, with only Fionna Heuff falling at the No. 1 spot for the Lady Toppers. Katrina Vucina, Carrie True, Leanne Caplinger, Katie DiTommaso and Jessi Brown all picked up wins on the singles side for WKU. In doubles, it was much of the same for the Lady Toppers, as Fiona Heuff and Katrina Vucina defeated Aurelie Hascoet and Ximena Aguilar 8-3, while Carrie True and Leanne Caplinger won 8-1, giving the Lady Toppers a 6-1 overall win.
The Lady Toppers will hit the road to Southern Indiana Friday, February 12, while the Hilltoppers return to action along with the Lady Toppers the following day, Saturday, February 13 against visiting Lipscomb.
