BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University men's and women's tennis teams turned in an impressive weekend, sweeping both Campbellsville and Cumberland on Friday and Saturday. The men's squad, which went an astounding 11-1 in singles over the two matches, shut out Campbellsville 7-0 on Friday, then followed up that performance with an impressive 6-1 win over Cumberland on Saturday. For the Lady Toppers, the results were much of the same, as WKU took care of Campbellsville 6-1, then survived a scare from Cumberland on Saturday, winning the final singles match to earn a 4-3 overall win.
Arul Selvan continued his tear in 2010 for the Hilltoppers (4-0), posting a pair of singles wins to boost his overall record to 4-0, while also staying perfect in four doubles matches. Selvan defeated Zach Malyon of Campbellsville 6-2, 6-3 and Felipe Oliveira of Cumberland 6-3, 6-2.
In the Campbellsville match, the Hilltoppers won all six singles, with Thomas Krug winning at the No. 1 spot 6-2, 6-3 to set the pace for WKU. Craig Kirchgessner, Lance Freeman and Bobby Whitmer would all conclude the singles portion winning in straight sets. WKU also took two out of the three doubles matches.
For the Lady Toppers (3-2) against Campbellsville, five of the six singles would go in favor of WKU, with only Fionna Huff falling at the No.1 spot. Katrina Vucina, playing at No. 2, defeated Stacey Drew of Campbellsville 6-1, 6-0 to get the Lady Toppers on the board in singles and set the stage for a string of five consecutive singles wins to finish out the match. Carrie True, Megan Stephens, Leanne Caplinger and Lauren Arnold would all follow up Vucina with wins. WKU took all three doubles as well.
The momentum would carry over to Saturday for WKU, as the Hiltoppers took five of the six singles and all three doubles to down Cumberland 6-1. With another win at the No. 1 spot for Thomas Krug, the senior has now won three straight singles after dropping his opener against Union College. Lance Freeman also improved to 3-1 on the year, defeating Jeremy Fleming of Cumberland 6-1, 6-3. Craig Kirchgessner, playing in his first two singles of the season over the weekend, went 2-0 after posting a 6-3, 6-4 win over Devin Crotzer of Cumberland. Currie Martin also went 2-0 over the weekend, playing at the No. 2 spot for the Hilltoppers.
The Lady Toppers would use a sweep in all three doubles competitions and a final singles win from Lauren Arnold to hold on for a 4-3 win over Cumberland. Aside from Arnold, Carrie True improved to 4-1 on the year, winning in a third set over Amber Johnson. Fionna Huff, playing at No. 2, gave WKU its first singles win of the day, winning 6-1, 6-1. The Lady Toppers were dominant in doubles, with the team of Vucina and Huf setting the stage with an 8-4 win.
