BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University women's tennis team dropped both matches over the weekend, falling Friday evening 4-3 on the road at Southern Indiana, and 5-2 at home against Lipscomb Saturday afternoon.
Against Southern Indiana, the Lady Toppers (1-2) did get wins from their top three singles positions, with Katrina Vucina overpowering Michelle Girgenti at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-0. Fionna Huff followed up Vucina's performance with a convincing 6-4, 6-3 win over Gretchen Cantwell. At the No. 3 singles spot, Carrie True outlasted Katie Jo Clagg 6-4, 7-5, but WKU would proceed to drop the final three singles and two out of the three doubles to fall to Southern Indiana 4-3. The doubles team of Vucina and Huff received the lone doubles win for the Lady Toppers, taking down the team of Girgenti and Clagg 9-8.
The following day against Lipscomb, WKU would get wins from Fionna Huff and Leanne Caplinger, both in the singles competition. Huff, improving to 2-1 with the singles win, defeated Elizabeth Keevil 6-1, 6-0 while Caplinger, also improving to 2-1 on the year, defeated Julianne McMeen 1-6, 6-3, 10-5.
The Lady Toppers will return to action Friday, February 19 in a home match against Campbellsville.
