Bowling Green, Ky. The ups and downs continue for the Western Kentucky University women's tennis team after a heart-breaking loss to Belmont that saw two singles matches go the distance that WKU could not pull out.
WKU (2-2, 0-0 SBC) opened the match winning the crucial doubles point. Erin Fulkerson and Marija Djuran took down Tatitana Pozo and Whitnie Warren 8-3 at the top spot. The twin sisters Marlou and Margot Van Bussel held off Laura Stack and Lindsey Bennett at No. 2, 9-7.
Belmont was able to tie the match at 1-1 after Warren knocked off Fulkerson at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4. Abby Leatherwood gave the Lady Bruins the first lead in the match with a straight-set victory over Djuran 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Marlou Van Bussel was the only Lady Topper to win her singles competition downing Bennett, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3.
With the match knotted at 2-2 heading into the final three singles matches, WKU only needed two more victories to secure the win. Jacomiey Feilzer fell to Abby Hogan in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 at No. 4 to give Belmont the 3-2 advantage. Margot Van Bussel was downed by Lauren Lrick at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1 and Carrie True rallied back from 5-7 down in the first set to eventually fall in a third set tie breaker, 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 to Stack.
The Lady Toppers will look to get back on the winning track Saturday against Lipscomb. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Total Fitness Connection.
