Nashville, Tenn. The Western Kentucky University men’s and women’s tennis teams swept through the Tigers of Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon with both squads winning 7-0. The Hilltoppers allowed only 15 games through the singles portion on the match while the Lady Toppers had three players not drop a game in singles and only gave up three games in double competition.
The Hilltoppers advance their record to 10-4 on the year, as the Lady Toppers move to .500 at 7-7.
Winners of their last six of seven matches, the Hilltoppers started the match with a furry giving up only four doubles games to TSU. Thomas Krug and Chad True teamed at the top spot to defeat Justin Hamm and Aaron Fields 8-2. Quinn Saine and David Bowman downed Jaala Brooks and Mike Mosley 8-1 at No. 2 and the No. 3 squad of Andy True and Currie Martin dropped Austin Fields and Brandon Cobb 8-1.
Krug knocked off Hamm at the top seed in singles 6-2, 6-1. C. True took care of Aa. Fields 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, while A. True beat Au. Fields 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3. Martin blanked Brooks 6-0, 6-0 at the four spot. Andrew Swanson picked up a win over Mosley at No. 5, 6-0, 6-3 and Bowman defeated Cobb 6-0, 6-2 at the final singles position.
The Lady Toppers took the court looking to redeem itself from the match against Middle Tennessee. Erin Fulkerson and Marija Djuran dropped Meagan Haynes and Penelope Johnson 8-0 at the top seeded doubles position. Brittany Waiz and Krystal Brown beat Marliza Abernathy and Melissa Martin 8-2 at the second spot and Carrie True teamed with Leanne Caplinger to take down Dania Lofton and Cherrelle Coleman 8-1 at No. 3.
Djuran, Waiz, and Caplinger all blanked their opponents in singles competition at the No. 2, 3 and 6 spots, respectively. Fulkerson beat Haynes 6-2, 6-0 at the top spot. Ca. True defeated Abernathy 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and K. Brown collected the win over Martin 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5.
The Hilltoppers will be in action again on April 11th in Nashville when they face Belmont at 2 p.m. (CDT). The Hilltoppers have already beaten the Bruins earlier in the year. The Lady Toppers will face the Lady Bruins on that date as well.
