Bowling Green, Ky. The Western Kentucky University men’s and women’s tennis programs both collected wins this past weekend. The Lady Toppers knocked off Austin Peay on Friday afternoon 6-1 and the Hilltoppers downed Lipscomb 5-2 on Sunday.
With the two wins both teams keep winning streaks alive. The Lady Toppers move to 2-4 and the Hilltoppers advance to 4-2.
Marija Djuran started the match with a victory over Mariana Pagan 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the top spot for the Lady Toppers. Erin Fulkerson followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Michelle Liew. No. 4 Carrie True defeated Laura Gonzalez 6-1, 6-0. Krystal Brown knocked off Alexandria Pyle 5-7, 6-0, 14-12 at No. 5 and Leanne Caplinger downed Mary Beth Lefler 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The Lady Toppers took advantage of the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 spot and No. 3 position. Djuran and Fulkerson teamed to take down Pagan and Morgan Klieber 8-4 and Caplinger and True defeated Pyle and Lefler 8-3.
The Hilltoppers won four of the six singles matches against Lipscomb. WKU swept the top-three spots with wins from Thomas Krug, Chad True and Andy True. Krug took down Daniel Hanstefer 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1. C. True defeated Jeff West 6-3, 6-2 and A. True dropped Josh Cummings 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3. Currie Martin picked up the fourth singles win over James Murrell 3-6, 6-3, 10-3 at No. 5.
Krug and C. True teamed to take the first double match 8-6 over Hangstefer and Mario Herandez. A. True and Martin took down West and Joe McArdle 8-4 to take the doubles point.
Both teams will travel to IUPU-Fort Wayne on Friday. The matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m. (CST).
