Eight Hilltoppers competed in the singles and doubles divisions. In Flight A1 Singles, WKU’s Mikus Paipars was defeated 6-0, 6-3 by Felipe Lima of Belmont.
In Flight A2 Singles, Tyler Merchant fell to Greg Pollack of Middle Tennessee 6-0, 6-0, while Stan Rabinovics dropped his match to Mark Gellard of South Alabama 6-3, 6-2.
In Flight B1 Singles, Franco Serra and Chad True saw action. Serra won his match 6-4, 6-4 against Marc Boiron of Middle Tennessee, but True lost to Andrew Olswing of Memphis 6-1, 6-2.
To finish out the singles brackets, in Flight B1, J.R Baker, David Bowman and Ryan Durham each competed. Baker fell 7-5, 6-4 to Shayan Mirhosseini of Cumberland University, while Bowman was beaten by Brian Bankester of Memphis 7-6 (0), 6-0, and Durham was defeated by Edgar Galea of Cumberland 6-4, 6-4.
In the doubles, Paipars and Rabinovics competed in Flight 1 and lost to Memphis 8-2. In Flight Two, True and Merchant were defeated 8-4 by Cumberland, Baker and Bowman lost to Southern Illinois 8-4, and Serra and Durham were knocked off by Memphis 8-0.
Serra moves on to the quaterfinal round and will take on Mark Finnegan of Memphis at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) tomorrow (Sept. 18). There is a “First Match” consolation for all singles flights, so the rest of the Western men will be in action again tomorrow with times yet to be determined.
