In Flight D singles Laura Caffey competed in the semifinal round but was defeated by Middle Tennessee's Jacqui Williams 6-1, 6-0. In Flight E singles Holly Kell fell to Seden Soyalp of UAB 6-0, 6-0.
The rest of the singles competition for Western was played in consolation flights. In Flight A singles Ieva Balcus was overcome by UAB's Annemieke Elsholz 6-3, 6-2. In Flight B singles Linda Johnansson of Belmont beat Ilze Rozentale 3-6, 6-0, 10-6. In Flight C singles Memphis' Alex Tjioe took out Dana Underdonk 6-0, 6-1.
In Flight D singles Brittney Waiz easily took care of Francesca Guerrieri of Chattanooga 6-0, 6-2. Jillian Becher defeated Ariana Gracia-Medrano of Morehead State 6-4, 3-6, 10-3. This afternoon Waiz and Becher faced off against each other and Waiz won 6-0, 6-2; the win sends Waiz into the final match in Flight D Consolation singles tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. (CDT).
In Flight E singles Kell fell to Stephanie Wuenscher of Cumberland 6-1, 6-1. The only doubles team competing for Western today was Waiz and Becher; they dropped their match to Monica Bertram of Tennessee Martin and Kathrin Kohl of Memphis 9-7.
All of the Lady Toppers will be cheering on their teammate Waiz tomorrow, as she tries to win the Flight D Consolation Bracket at 9 a.m.
