In Flight A singles Marlene Dirnstorfer of Memphis defeated Ieva Balcus 6-1, 6-1. In Flight B singles Ornischa Maier-Knapp of UAB beat Ilze Rozentale 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second round of play. In Flight C singles Dana Underdonk fell to Chattanooga's Bonnie Adams 6-0, 6-2. In Flight D singles Western Kentucky had three ladies compete. Laura Caffey still had her momentum from the Evansville Fall Classic where she won her flight's championship two weeks ago and advanced today over Christy Fazio of Chattanooga 6-0, 6-1. Freshmen Brittany Waiz fell to Antonia Nugent of UAB 6-4, 6-0 and Jillian Becher fell to Casey Hall of Lipscomb 7-5, 6-2. In Flight E singles Holly Kell received a bye and will face off in the semifinals against UAB's Seden Soyalp tomorrow (Oct. 9th) morning at 9 a.m.
Since Caffey won her first singles match at 9 a.m. she competed again at 12 p.m. in the Flight D singles quarterfinal round where she overwhelmed Belmont's Burgundy Moss 6-0, 6-4. Caffey will now face Jacqui Williams of Middle Tennessee tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. in the semifinal round.
In Flight A doubles Balcus and Rozentale were defeated by Carlin Cochran and Claire Conerly of Ole Miss 8-1. In Flight B doubles Caffey and Kell were beat by UAB's team of Soyalp and Samria Tanzea 8-0. In Flight C only three teams are competing and a round-robin format is being used. Becher and Waiz were overcome by Adrian Gracia-Medrano and Leah Lobnitz of Morehead State 8-4.
All of the Lady Toppers will compete again tomorrow in singles and doubles with play beginning at 9 a.m. and singles going first.
