Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University women's tennis team opened up their season in impressive fashion this weekend, picking up wins over Lipscomb and Morehead State. The Lady Toppers won 4-2 in both contests, led by freshman Karina Ledaja who won both of her matches at number one-singles and number one-doubles.
On Friday, WKU ruined the Bisons' home opener with a 4-2 victory as head coach Jeff True received singles wins from Ledaja, freshman Ieva Balcus at number two and sophomore Emily Lichtenberg at number six. Ledaja and Balcus paired up for a victory at number-one doubles, while Lichtenberg and senior Jennifer Granger prevailed at number-three doubles.
The Lady Toppers picked up their second victory of the year in the opening installment of Saturday's doubleheader with the men's team against the Eagles. Ledaja and Lichtenberg picked up singles wins at number one and number six, respectively, while junior Olga Kosaka chipped in with a win at number-four singles. Ledaja and Balcus picked up their second doubles win of the young season, followed by a win from Kosaka and senior Lienne Rozentale at number-two doubles.
The Lady Toppers host Arkansas State Sunday, Feb. 2, at 7 a.m. and will not return to action until Feb. 14, when they welcome Belmont at 7 p.m.
