Carbondale, Ill. - The Western Kentucky University men's and women's diving teams continued thier winning ways on Saturday sweeping Southern Illinois University in the SIU Rec Center Pool. The women picked up their school-record 16th win of the season with a 124-119 victory, while the men remained unbeaten with a 134-109 win.
Paced by one-two finishes in three events, including both diving events, the Lady Toppers improved to 16-3. Western sophomore Trisha Nailor (Angola, Ind.) won both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter events with scores of 261.90 and 252.380 respectively. Both scores were season bests for Nailor. Junior Marci Kascir (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished second in both events. The freshmen tandem of Meredith Mountjoy (Louisville, Ky.) and Stacey Schortgen (Chrusbusco, Ind.) took the top two spots in thw 100 Butterfly. Mountjoy won in 59.49, while Schortgen beat Brigitta Olson by a :00.01 for second with a time of 1:00.21. Carol Brown (Sr., Fortaleza-Ce, Brazil) picked up first in the 50 Freestyle (25.24) and Lucy Faria (Madison, Wis./West) won the 100 Breastroke (1:40.62). The Lady Toppers also finished first in both relays. Alexis Rieck (Fr., Kitchener, Ontario), Faria, Mountjoy and Brown teamed to win the 200 Medley Relay (1:51.11) and the foursome of Rachel Buncher (Fr., Nicholasville, Ky.), Jordan Beck (Fr., Normandy, Tenn.), Carrie Redmon (Fr., Bowling Green, Ky.), and Brown finished on top in the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:40.62) by over a second in the final event of the day.
The men improved to 11-0 by winning nine events including a sweep of the top three spots in 100 Butterfly by Chad Waits (So., Shelbyville, Ky.), Ryan Crosby (Jr., Escondido, Calif), and Greg Strickler (So., Midland, Mich). Waits won in a time of 50.06 In the 1000 Freestyle, freshmen Karl Swanson (Bowling Green, Ky.) and James Campbell (Dacula, Ga.) finished one-two with times of 9:31.27 and 9:39.19, respectively. The men also took the top two places in the 200 IM with Strickler finishing first in a time of 1:54.86 and Paul Graves (Louisville, Ky.) taking second in 1:56.40. Senior Jerrod Janes (Carlsbad, N.M) won botht the 50 Freestyle (21.29) and the 100 Freestyle (46.89). Freshman Chris Tarter (Campbellsville, Ky.) won the 100 breastroke in 59.15) Not to be outdone senior Gord Veldman (Kingston, Ontario) finished first in the 100 Backstroke in SIU Rec Center Pool Record time of 48.93. In the relays, the group of Veldman, Charles Knight (Sr., Avon, N.Y), Crosby and Matt Nalbone (Jr. Niagara Falls, N.Y.) won the 200 Medley in 1:32.64. The WKU foursome of Veldman, Nalbone, Janes and anchor Drew Aldridge (Jr., Shelbyville, Ky.) finished first in the 200 Freestyle relay in 1:23.59.
WKU travels to Evansville next Saturday for a 1 p.m. meet.
