Bowling Green, Ky. - The Western Kentucky University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept their University of Evansville counterparts on Saturday afternoon to complete the road portion of their dual-meet schedule. The men downed the Aces 132-70 and the Lady Toppers won 138-103.
The men won 10 of 13 events and finished one-two in five to improve their record to a perfect 12-0. The Hilltoppers opened the afternoon by getting first in second in the 200 Medley relay. The foursome of Gord Veldman (Sr. Kingston, Ontario), Chris Tarter (Campbellsville, Ky.), Jay Smith (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and Drew Aldridge (Shelbyville, Ky.) won the event in a time of 1:35.03, while Greg Strickler (So., Midland, Mich.), Charles Knight (Sr., Avon, N.Y.), Ryan Crosby (Jr., Escondido, Calif.) and Jerrod Janes (Sr., Carlsbad, N.M.), finished second (1:35.29). Other one-two finishes came in the 500 Freestyle, with Nick Bracco (So., Leawood, Kan.) finishing first in 4:48.20 and Strickler second (4:49.41) and the 200 Breaststroke in which Tarter finished first (2:12.89) and Stephen Ayers (Fr., Forest, Va.) second (4:49.41). In diving, Donny Glass (Bay City, Mich.) won both the 1-Meter (222.95) and 3-Meter (195.5) followed by Michael Laake (Fr., Lawrenceburg, Ind.) in second. Western also won the 200 Freestyle Relay as Shane Music (Fr., Boones Camp, Ky.), Bracco, Tommy Pollock (Fr., Plant City, Fla.), and Chris Raniere (Fr., Florida, N.Y.) finished in a time of 1:28.48. Other first place finishers were: Kevin Kleman (Jr., Lakeside Park, Ky.) in the 1000 Freestyle (9:43.11); Veldman in the 50 Freestyle (21.36); Alex Handley (So., Kensington, England) in the 200 Butterfly (1:54.37); and Aldridge finsihed first in the 48.58.
On the women's side, the Lady Toppers won six of 13 events. Western swept the top three spots in the 500 Freestyle with Lisa Ross (Fr., Merrillville, Ind.) finishing first (5:13.52) followed by Meredith Mountjoy (Fr., Louisville, Ky.) (5:13.79) and Amber Miller (Fr., Liberty Township, Ohio) (5:18.40). Ross and Stacey Schortgen (Fr., Crhusbusco, Ind.) finished one-two in the 1000 Freestyle completing the course in 10:36.23 and 10:38.79, respectively. The WKU combo of Marci Kascir (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) and Trisha Nailor (So., Angola, Ind.) finished one-two in both diving events. Kascir won with a score of 219.90 in the 3-Meter Diving competition with Nailor second (217.75). In the 1-Meter event, Kascir finished first with a score of 230.45. Nailor was second with 212.95 points. Mountjoy got the victory in the 200 Freestyle winning in her best time of the season in 1:57.61. Alexis Rieck (Fr., Kitchener, Ontario), Deanne Thomas (Sr., Bowling Green, Ky.), Rachel Buncher (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Carol Brown (Sr. Fortaleza-Ce, Brazil) teamed to win the 200 Freestyle relay in 1:42.97.
Western closes out its dual meet schedule by hosting Southwest Missouri State and Emory on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Preston Center Aquatic Center.
