Bowling Green,Ky. - The Western Kentucky men's tennis team participated in the Middle Tennessee Fall Invitational over the weekend. The event was broken up into a ranked flight with round-robin play, as well as three flights of singles (A1, A2, and B) and three flights of doubles (1-3). There was also a first-match consolation bracket.
After receiving a first round bye In the men's Flight A2 singles bracket on Friday morning, Western's Mikus Paipers defeated Lukasz Soswa of Southern Illinois 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-8 in the second round Friday night. On Saturday in the third round, Paipers lost to eventual flight runner-up Luis Aguerrevere 6-4, 2-6, 10-2. Hilltopper Evalds Jurrans won his first round match against Vanderbilt's Josh Tarkoff by default before falling in the second round to eventual champion Anant Sitaram 6-3, 6-7 (3), 10-8. Western's Stanislaus Rabinovics bowed out in the first round to Middle Tennessee's Rishan Kuruppu 6-3, 6-3. Rabinovics recovered to win two matches in the consolation bracket, knocking off Jameel Brown of Tennessee State 6-3, 6-4 and Rodney Rapson of Jacksonville State by default before falling to Arkansas Little Rock's Mark Edney in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-7, 10-8.
In Flight A3 of the men's single bracket, Western's Josh Haines won his first round match Friday against Evansville's Kevin Lannan 6-4, 6-7 (3), 10-6 before falling to Louisville's Josh Surowski in the second round of the evening, 7-6, 6-2. Hilltopper Ryan Turnham lost to Vanderbilt's Jean Pilgrims-Larsen 6-3, 6-2. Jared Bolton also participated in the event, losing a first round match to Austin Peay's Wes Pancho 6-2, 6-2.
In the second flight of the men's doubles on Saturday, Papers and Jurans lost to MTSU's Brandon Allan and Greg Pollack by default.
