Mobile, Ala. - The Westen Kentucky men's and women's tennis teams saw their 2002 seasons come to an end this weekend at the Sun Belt Conference Championships on the campus of the University of South Alabama.
The 11th-seeded Lady Toppers (6-10) were eliminated from the tournament in their first match, falling to #6 Arkansas State 6-0 on Friday. The Lady Indians swept the three doubles matches to take the doubles point, and won the first five singles matches to advance to the second round. The loss placed Western in 11th place in the tournament.
The Hilltoppers (6-14), seeded eighth in the men's bracket, faced #1 South Alabama in their first match Friday afternoon. The Jaguars advanced with a 4-0 win over the Hilltoppers. Western closed out the tournament with two matches on Saturday, falling to #4 Arkansas-Little Rock 4-0. That loss placed them in the seventh-place match later that afternoon against #7 Denver. The Hilltoppers woes continued in their final match as the Pioneers came out on top 5-0, taking seventh place while the Toppers finished eighth.
South Alabama swept the conference championships as the #2-seeded Lady Jaguars won their 11th-straight conference championship with a 4-0 win over #1-seed Flordia International in the championship match, while the Jaguars took their ninth men's title in ten years, knocking off #2-seed Middle Tennessee in the finals.
