Muncie, Ind. - The Western Kentucky swimming and diving teams had mixed results Saturday morning in a dual meet with Ball State University. The men needed a at least a second place finish in 400-Yard Freestyle Relay in the day's last swimming event to remain undefeated and got it to win 123.50 to 119.50. The Lady Toppers fell for just the third time this season and for the first time to a team other than Air Force as Ball State won 151-92.
In the men's meet, the foursome of Jay Smith (Jr., Hopkinsville, Ky.), Matt Nalbone (Jr., Niagara Falls, N.Y.), Ryan Crosby (So., San Marcos, Calif.), and Jerrod Janes (Sr., Carlsbad, N.M.) defeated the Ball State 'B' relay team by .19 seconds to give the Hilltoppers the victory. Nick Bracco (So., Leawood, Kan.) and Chris Tarter (Fr., Campbellsville, Ky.) joined Crosby and Nalbone to finish first in the 400-Yard Medley Relay. The distance freestyle trio of Karl Swanson (Fr., Bowling Green, Ky.), James Campbell (Fr., Dacula, Ga.), and Kevin Kleman (Jr., Lakeside Park, Ky.) also came up big in the 1000 and 500-Yard Freestyle events sweeping the top three in each. In the 1000, Swanson finished first followed Kleman and Campbell, while the 500 saw Campbell touch the wall first followed by Swanson and Kleman. Other winners were Janes in the 50-Yard Free, Greg Strickler (So., Midland, Mich.) in the 200-Yard IM, and Chad Waits (So., Shelbyville, Ky.) in the 200-Yard Butterfly.
The women continued to get strong performances from its younger swimmers. Freshmen Jordan Beck (Normandy, Tenn.) and Lisa Ross (Merrillville,Ind.) earned two of the Lady Toppers three first place results in swimming. Beck touched first in the 200-Yard Butterfly, while Ross won the 1000 Free. Lucy Faria (So., Madison, Wisc.) won the 200-Yard Breaststroke. On the diving board, Trisha Nailor (So., Ft. Wayne, Ind.) and Marci Kacsir (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) finished 1-2 in the 3-Meter event.
