Monroe, La. - The Western Kentucky University men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Monroe, La. Saturday and swept dual meets with Louisiana-Monroe and Centenary. The men downed the hosts 139-103 and Centenary 52-23, while the women defeated ULM 148-88 and Centenary 52-23.
The men dominated the competition in their first dual meets of the season winning seven of 13 events on the afternoon. Jerrod Janes (Sr., Carlsbad, N.M.) and James Campbell (Fr., Dacula, Ga.) led the way for the Hilltoppers as each won two individual events. Janes won the 50 Freestyle in 21.35 and the 100 Free in 47.38. He also swam the anchor leg in the 400 Freestyle Relay, which finished first in 3:12.28. Campbell took top honors in the 500 Free (4:42.99) and the 1000 Free (9:42.20).
The women were even tougher than the men winning nine of 13 events. For the Lady Toppers, freshman Rachel Buncher (Fr., Nicholasville, Ky.) was the lone two-time winner in the individual events. Buncher won the 200 Free by nearly two seconds in 1:57.11. She finished first in the 100 Free in 54.85. The women are now 8-2 on the season in dual meets with their only losses coming to Air Force on both days of the Sun Belt Fall Classic. With the win over Monroe, who entered the Sun Belt Conference this season, the Lady Toppers are 7-0 over conference opponents.
Both Western teams will head north for their next competition. They will take on Wisconsin-Green Bay in dual meets on Friday and Saturday and then visit Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Sunday.
