LAS CRUCES, N.M. - For the second straight day, the Western Kentucky University women's team went 3-1 at the Sun Belt Conference Fall Classic quad-dual meet hosted by New Mexico State University. Western finished the meet with a 6-2 mark.
The Lady Toppers downed the University of Denver 153-89, the University of North Texas 170-67 and the hosts 130-113. The U.S. Air Force Academy handed WKU its lone loss in Saturday's action 135 to 108. Air Force went 8-0 in the two-day meet.
Freshman Meredith Mountjoy (Louisville, Ky./Ballard continued to lead the Lady Toppers. Mountjoy who won the 400 Individual Medley on Friday, won the 200 IM on Saturday in (2:12.80). Fellow freshman Rachel Buncher (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic) made it a sweep of the top two spots finishing second in the event. Mountjoy also finished second place in the 100 Butterfly (1:00.52) and was part of the 400 Freestyle Relay with sophomore Alexis Reick (Kitcherner, Ontario/Waterloo), senior Carol Brown (Fortaleza-Ce, Brazil/Farias Brito), and Buncher that finished second in 3:44.60.
Mountjoy wasn't the only Western swimmer to earn a first-place finish Saturday. Senior Deanne Thomas (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.94. Reick finished second in the event and freshman Jordan Beck (Normandy, Tenn./Tullahoma) made it three Lady Toppers in the top five.
Both the WKU men's and women's swim teams will be in action next weekend when they travel to Monroe, La. for dual meets with Louisiana-Monroe and Centernary at noon.
