BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Strong singles play carried Western Kentucky's men's and women's tennis teams to victories over Cumberland University Friday at the WKU Tennis Courts.
The women's team (12-4) extended their winning streak to 10 matches, sweeping all nine matches for a 7-0 win. Junior Therese Johannsen (?sthammar, Sweden) won in easy fashion 6-1, 6-1 over Cumberland's Alice King at No. 1 singles, as did fellow junior Nino Kostava (Ibilisi, Rep. of Georgia) at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-1 over Cumberland's Brittney Pointer. Kostava leads the team with a 13-3 mark in singles play, one year after being sidelined after only five matches with a herniated disk.
Sophomore Liene Rozentale (Riga, Latvia) dropped the first set to Cumberland's Alyssa Rosenheck at No. 2 singles, before recovering to take the last two sets in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 decision.
The Lady Toppers haven't lost a match since an 8-1 loss to David Lipscomb on March 8 in Nashville.
The men's team took four of six singles matches to clinch a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs and reached the .500 mark again this season at 7-7.
Senior Michael Lindskog (Stjarnhov, Sweden) led the Hilltoppers at the No. 1 singles spot with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Cumberland's Pieter Faasen, his ninth win in his last 10 matches. Sophomore Evalds Jurans (Riga, Latvia) won easily at No. 2 singles 7-5, 6-1 over the Bulldogs' Glen Kitner.
The doubles duo of sophomore Wimal Wijenayake (Henderson, Ky.) and freshman Martins Jaunzems (Riga, Latvia) picked up Western's only doubles win at No. 3 with an 8-6 defeat of CU's Christian Martinez and John McElroy.
Both teams will close out the regular season against David Lipscomb tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CDT) at the WKU Tennis Courts.
