CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Western Kentucky's women's tennis team extended its winning streak to five games with a 6-1 ictory over Southeast Missouri Friday and a 4-1 defeat of Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday.
Western took two of three singles matches against UMKC (1-5) and led in another before the Kangaroos' Emily Danielson defaulted giving freshman Olga Kosaka (Riga, Latvia) the deciding point after winning the first set 7-5 at No.5 singles. Junior Therese Johannsen (?sthammar, Sweden) defeated UMKC's Erin Rosenberg 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and junior Nino Kostava (Ibilisi, Rep. of Georgia) won 6-4, 6-1 as well over Erica Al-Annan at No. 3 singles.
The Lady Toppers had also taken the doubles point with Johannsen and Kostava defeating the Kangaroos' No. 1 doubles team of Rosenberg and Yeena Podorozhansky 8-4. At No. 2 doubles Western's duo of sophomores Liene Rozentale (Riga, Latvia) and Jennifer Granger (Newburgh, Ind.) defeated Danielson and Deepa Mangalat 8-6.
Western took five of six singles matches Friday against Southeast Missouri (4-4) led by straight set victories by Rozentale at No. 2 singles and Kostava at No. 3. Rozentale defeated SEMO's Adrienne Bland 6-0, 6-2 and Kostava handled the Otahkian's Kathleen Davis 6-1, 6-1. At No. 6 singles, sophomore Amanda Cummins (Bowling Green, Ky.) defeated edged out SEMO's Jessica Campbell 7-5, 7-6.
WKU also took two of three doubles matches against Southeast Missouri with Johannsen and Kostava defeating SEMO's No. 1 team of Bland and Mel Thomas 8-6. Kosaka and freshman Erin Colson (Lexington, Ky.) defeated Katie Barry and Kay Ehlke 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Western improves to 9-4 on the season and will take on Cumberland University tomorrow in Lebanon, Tenn.
