RICHMOND, Ky. - After dropping the first two matches of the weekend, Western Kentucky's women's tennis team rebounded to pull out a 5-2 win over Morehead State Saturday at the Greg Adams Indoor Tennis Center.
Nino Kostava (Jr./ Ibilisi, Rep. of Georgia) improved to 3-1 on the season by defeating Morehead State's Karla Zaldo 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Liene Rozenthale (Jr. / Riga, Latvia) grabbed another three-set victory for the Lady Toppers dispatching MSU's Isabelle Sovey 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.
Western also grabbed the doubles point in the match with Kostava and Therese Johannsen (Jr. /?sthammar, Sweden) defeating MSU's Julie Ryan and Tendai Chingoka 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and taking the No. 3 match by default. At No. 5 singles, Jennifer Granger (So. / Newburgh, Ind.) improved her singles record to 2-2 on the season with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Marisa Richelle for the decisive margin.
The Lady Toppers rebounded Saturday after dropping a tight 5-2 loss to host Eastern Kentucky on Friday night and falling 6-1 to Xavier in an earlier match Saturday. Johannsen and Granger picked up singles wins for Western against the Colonels. Johannsen defeated EKU's Tara Williams 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Granger defeated Rachel Long 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot. Rozentale grabbed the first set against Eastern's Susan Ferguson in No. 1 singles, but dropped the last two sets in tiebreaks.
Western snaps a two-match losing streak with the victory and improves to 2-2 on the season, matching last year's win total in only its fourth match.
The Lady Toppers will next travel to Louisville, Ky. Saturday (Feb. 24) to take on Indiana State.
