BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - In its first match under Head Coach Jeff True, Western Kentukcy's women's tennis team defeated Evansville 4-3 in a tight match Sunday night in Bowling Green.
After sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, Western relied on its experienced veterans for the win capturing the top three singles matches in straight sets.
Liene Rozenthale (Jr. / Riga, Latvia) grabbed Western's first singles win with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over UE's Brandee Fox at No. 2 singles.At the top singles spot, Therese Johannsen (Jr. / ?sthammar, Sweden) clinched Western's win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Evansville's Bambi McCann . Johannsen led Western with a 10-8 mark in singles play last season and improves her career mark to 27-14 .
In her first match since a season-ending injury five matches into last season, Nino Kostava (Jr. / Ibilisi, Rep. of Georgia) also pulled out an important win for the Lady Toppers. Kostava won the first set 9-7 in a tiebreak before outlasting Evansville's Brook Hoener 7-5 in the second. Kostava was 4-1 last season before being sidelined with a herniated disk.
Western picks up a win in its first match of the season after going 2-17 in 2000. They will travel to Richmond, Ky. this weekend to take on Morehead State and Xavier on Saturday (Feb. 17) and Eastern Kentucky on Sunday (Feb. 18).
